Hey, I'm Cheryl
It can seem that while your body is in the present moment, your mind rarely is. Can you relate to that?
In the chaos of every day life, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the chaos of yesterday’s worries or tomorrow’s uncertainties. As moms of adolescents, our minds often race with thoughts about our teens’ futures, their well-being, and the myriad of responsibilities pulling us in every direction. However, amidst this flurry of activity, there exists a profound and transformative power—the power of the present moment.
Being in the present moment means fully immersing yourself in the here and now, letting go of past regrets and future anxieties. It’s about embracing the richness of the present, savoring every moment with your teen and other loved ones, and cultivating a deep connection that transcends time. When you learn to be in the present moment, you not only enhance your relationships with those you love most but also foster a sense of peace and fulfillment within yourself.
Being in the Present Moment Today
So, how do you cultivate this presence in your daily life? It starts with a conscious decision to prioritize the present moment. Here are some simple yet powerful practices to help you be in the present moment and be there for your adolescent:
Mindful Moments: Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine by setting aside dedicated time for mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or simply grounding yourself in the present moment. Research suggests that mindfulness can improve focus, reduce stress, boost memory, and increase emotional intelligence. When we’re mindful, we’re able to process information more efficiently, make better decisions, and live more fully in the present moment. Imagine what it can do you for your relationship with your teen or pre-teen? Even just a few minutes of mindful breathing can help you center yourself and approach your interactions with your teen from a place of calmness and clarity.
Unplug and Connect: In today’s digital age, screens and notifications are constant distractions. Make a conscious effort to unplug from technology and be fully present when interacting with your teen. Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and engage in meaningful conversations or shared activities that allow you to connect on a deeper level. I actually have most notifications on my phone turned off reducing distractions throughout my entire day. This allows me to feel more in control of my time and let others in when I’m ready.
Practice Active Listening: Being there for your teen means more than just physically being present -it means actively listening to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment or distraction. Practice active listening by giving your full attention, maintaining eye contact, and validating their emotions. This simple yet powerful act can strengthen your bond and foster trust and openness between you and your teen.
Embrace Everyday Moments: Life is made up of countless small moments, each offering an opportunity to be fully present and engaged. Whether it’s sharing a meal together, going for a walk, or simply sitting side by side, take the time to embrace these everyday moments with your teen. Notice the beauty in the ordinary and cherish the simple joys of being together.
Let Go of Control: As moms, it’s natural to want to protect and guide our teens every step of the way. However, learning to let go of the need for control and instead trust in the present moment can lead to greater harmony and understanding in your relationship. Allow your teen the space to make their own choices and learn from their experiences, knowing that you are there to support and guide them along the way.
Cultivate Gratitude: Gratitude is a powerful tool for grounding ourselves in the present moment and appreciating the blessings in our lives. Take a moment each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for, whether it’s the laughter shared with your teen, the support of loved ones, or the beauty of nature. Cultivating a mindset of gratitude can help shift your focus from worries and stresses to the abundance of love and joy present in the here and now.
Practice Self-Compassion: Being there for your teen also means being there for yourself. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times. Remember that you are doing the best you can, and it’s okay to prioritize your own well-being and needs. By taking care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to show up fully present and supportive for your teen.
Conclusion
The power of the present moment is a gift that allows us to deepen our connections with our teens, nurture meaningful relationships, and find peace and fulfillment in our lives. By embracing mindfulness, active listening, gratitude, and self-compassion, you can learn to be in the present moment and be there for your adolescent in ways that truly matter.
