I’ve been coaching people to be their best for over twenty years and love seeing them thrive as they adjust the lens they’re looking through. As a mom of teengaers, I realized that I could use my talent to help moms feel less frustrated, isolated and defeated as their kids navigate the challenging teen years. Helping my clients improve their relationship with themselves and honor their needs is my superpower. You’ll love how your energy shifts and your interactions become more positive after working together! I’m excited for you to experience more peace and confidence and live the life you’re meant to live.
Imagine a leader who commands attention without speaking, or a family conversation that shifts from strained to meaningful. The key isn’t eloquence or quick fixes. It’s strategic listening. A deliberate, powerful kind of listening I call Silent Power. This skill transforms leadership, strengthens teams, and deepens relationships in both workplaces and homes.
What if mastering this one ability could enhance your influence, unify your team, and bring you closer to the people who matter most? That’s what strategic listening offers. I teach this in my workshop, Silent Power: Mastering Listening for Leadership Impact, which I offer on demand to organizations looking to elevate their leaders. (I’m also offering an open workshop April 2nd. Click here for your invitation.) Below, I’ll share why listening matters and how it works, along with a glimpse of what this workshop delivers.
Leadership isn’t about dominating discussions. It’s about understanding them. A 2016 Harvard Business Review study found that 86% of employees view leaders who listen well as more effective because they connect with what drives their teams (HBR, 2016). Consider a CEO who takes time to hear a frontline worker’s perspective. That moment can ignite innovation by showing every voice counts.
This principle extends beyond the office. At home, truly hearing a partner’s frustration or a child’s excitement forges trust where tension once stood. I’ve watched a simple question shift a strained exchange into a real connection. Whether you’re leading a boardroom or a household, influence grows from understanding, and that begins with listening.
Strong teams and relationships don’t form by chance. Listening makes them possible. According to Gallup’s 2021 State of the Global Workplace report, teams with engaged leaders who listen see 30% higher productivity and 21% greater profitability (Gallup, 2021). Picture a manager noticing a team member’s hesitant “looks good” during a meeting. By probing gently, they uncover a risk that saves a project. That’s the difference listening creates.
The same holds true personally. When a teenager says “School’s fine” but their tone wavers, a lecture might shut them down. Listening, however, opens the door to what’s really happening. Kim Scott, in Radical Candor, puts it sharply: “The best leaders listen to understand, not to reply” (Scott, 2017). At work or home, creating space for others to be heard builds trust and resilience, the foundations of any strong bond.
Strategic listening requires intention, not just attention. In my workshop, Silent Power: Mastering Listening for Leadership Impact, I teach three techniques to help organizations equip their leaders with this skill.
First, reflective listening. Restate what you hear, such as “So you’re saying…” to confirm understanding. Research from the International Journal of Listening shows this reduces miscommunication by 40% (Brownell, 2016). It’s effective whether you’re clarifying a colleague’s point or acknowledging a partner’s tough day.
Next, focus on what’s unsaid. Tone, pauses, and body language often reveal more than words. Psychologist Albert Mehrabian found that 93% of communication is nonverbal (Mehrabian, 1971). A hesitant “I’m fine” at work might signal stress, while at home it could hint at deeper worries. Tuning in sharpens your response.
Finally, embrace the pause. Waiting two or three seconds before replying gives others room to elaborate and you time to process. MIT studies confirm this boosts conversation quality (Pentland, 2012). I’ve seen it draw out insights from reticent team members and reluctant kids alike. These practices turn listening into a leadership advantage.
Mastering strategic listening creates a ripple effect. Professionally, it equips you to lead with greater influence and foster cohesive teams. Google’s Project Aristotle identified psychological safety, rooted in listening, as the top trait of high-performing teams (Google, 2015). A leader who hears concerns doesn’t just manage—they inspire.
That impact spills into personal life too. The same approach that navigates a workplace challenge can ease a family disagreement. I’ve used a thoughtful pause to uncover a team issue and later to connect with my son during a rough patch. Stephen Covey’s wisdom in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People rings true: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood” (Covey, 1989). One skill bridges both worlds, enhancing how you lead and live.
Listening isn’t a passive act. It’s a deliberate choice with profound results. Whether you seek leadership impact, stronger teams, or richer relationships, strategic listening delivers. I’ve witnessed it turn potential conflicts into opportunities for growth at work and home. Your organization can see that shift too.
That’s why I offer Silent Power: Mastering Listening for Leadership Impact as an on-demand workshop for organizations.
